8 1/2 (My All TIme Fave Film)

8 1/2

Director:Federico Fellini

Country: Italy

Date: 1963

The story, follows Guido, a movie director, staying at a health spa while trying toorganize his next movie. His problem is that he has no idea what the movie isabout, nor does he know what he is doing. He is having a director’s block.Everybody is ready and waiting for him to make a film.
8 ½ is one ofthe greatest films ever made. This is one of the films ive ever seen that completely blew me away. The moment the infamous opening scene flash right before my eyes i knew that im gonna love this film forever. I always get chills everytime i see it. The whole toneof the film is superbly hypnotic. The sharp contrast of black and white imageson the screen adds to the intoxicating ambiance of the film. The effect is classic, poetic and haunting. Watching the scenes are like I am floating inside myown mysterious but beautiful dream. The cinematography are one of the key to the film’ssuccess.
Every scenes lingers on my mind forever. Symbolisms are scattered all over. I especially like the slight anti catholic undertones of the film. The interweaving of dream, fantasies and memories are stunning. They blend seamlesslessly throughout the film. My fave parts are when he dreams about his old parents, the strict catholic school, his encounter with the cardinal in the steam room, themesmerizing last scene of the press conference.
This artistic endeavorof Federico Fellini influenced me to rediscover films of great classic Europeandirectors like berman, bunuel, visconti to name a few. I discover this film back in 2001. Before that I have no idea that there are other fantastic directorsbesides the formulaic films that American filmakers keep churning out.
After watching8 ½, my taste in films are never the sameagain. For those whohavent seen this movie or starting to step into the world of foreign cinema, ireally recommend to watch this film.
